The Good SaMEXICANS

Did you ever run into car trouble here in Mexico and wonder how far it was to the nearest telephone? It has been my experience in several instances that before one could even find a telephone pole, there would be one or more smiling Mexicans at hand to offer assistance. Driving along a main street in Jocotepec just this week, the road opened up in front of us without warning and the front end dropped into a deep channel.

Bodies appeared instantly; smiling volunteers heaved us back onto solid ground. Though disgruntled at the unmarked pit, we backed off with memories of smiling faces and helpful hands.

This week we parked in front of the Guadalajara Pharmacy in Ajijic, when the left side of the car sank down...a very flat, flat tire. Upon opening the trunk, it was found clinically clean as only father can clean. No jack or special tools etc. marred the immaculate trunk. My son sadly looked at the flat tire... without those special wrenches even a garage mechanic would not be able to remove the tire. A young Mexican lad was just getting into his pickup, I mustered up a smile of sorts and pointed to the sick tire. Instantly he came over, jack in hand, prepared to help change the tire. His jack and tools were useless. The next thing I knew, we were being ushered into his pickup and we were on our way to Roca Azul to pick up the tools and father. After a pleasant trip and quick cup of coffee, my son, his father and a bag of special tools were off to the rescue.

The story of the Good Samaritan was my youngest son's favorite Bible story.

Unclear about the word "Samaritan" he pronounced it the story of the good "SaAmerican." Felipe Franco, visiting from Guanajuato, was our good "SaMexican"

Thank God for all the good "SAMEXICANS."
