“Amigos, welcome to Tio Domingo,” Salvador said in near perfect English, as he held his arms wide, and motioned for us to take any table. We were the lone customers at this the normal siesta hour of 2 O’clock. Salvador commanded a personality of a man possessed with inner peace and tranquility seldom encountered. His self-confidence rolled on the floor in front of him and put all in its path at ease.

Finally, on this strange hot Wednesday April 4, I left the beautiful Lake Chapala for my much anticipated trip to the port of Acapulco.  The trip to the airport was pleasant, with light traffic, a comfortably air conditioned taxi.  At the airport, everything was reversed; it was hot, organized chaos because of the crush of passengers with small, medium, and large suitcases, and with children running everywhere and around everyone.  The baggage boys ought to have a special area, for we had to avoid them, like bulls in the street.

Saw an episode of “60 Minutes a week or so ago where one of the anchors set up a couple of actors to act like a babysitter and a little boy. The lady actor was supposed to berate the little boy actor in public places and the film crew was going to see what happened. What happened was that very few people stopped the verbal abuse to the little boy.

Rescate 911

It was 10 minutes before my shift would be over, when word reached us that the medics were on their way in with 7 patients from a motor vehicle crash on the libramiento.  To make matters worse, many of the patients were reported to be children.  Everyone scattered to prepare, somebody asked me to find a pediatric breathing device, my heart was heavy as I began the ominous search. The first ambulance arrived, cut the siren, backed in, and a parade of gurneys with bloody patients strapped to backboards began.  Not one of them would have been there if they had been belted. Not one.  Instead, five of them got their heads shaved and sewn up.
