How can you not love a country whose milk is made in LaLa Land, the bread is baked by a Bimbo and every single clerk in the entire country says, "May your way go well."

It was the big day, the day that I joined my fellow adventurers to go to the Andes and the jungle of the Amazon basin.

In the Miami airport I connected with the diverse and interesting group with whom I would spend the next three weeks. They are my fellow students, Art, Pam, Joyce, Joel, and Bonnie; all of us are in a two year internship in Shamanism. We were joined by Tom, Mia and Roberta when a flight from Boston came in, on time, with Wendy from England, Ed and Susan, a couple who are consultants for the Nature Conservancy, now stationed in New Guinea, and Christina, a Victoria's Secret model. Also joining us was another Wendy who would be a co-leader with John and Art, and is a movie producer from San Diego, and Juan Gabriel, our Ecuadorian co-leader who will be able to translate from the Shuar language of the natives of the Amazon.

"Now Jeannie dear, drink up your nice hot cup of ginger tea. It will make your cough go away. There's a good girl." I can still hear the gentle, coaxing voice of my mother out of the misty past. Whenever I had a cold as a young child I got the ginger tea cure. I vividly recall that it made my throat feel as if I were swallowing pins and needles. To this day ginger is one popular spice I seldom use, although it was one of the earliest spices to be introduced to Western Europe in the 19th century.

Some time ago I wrote about Edith Wharton and the Mountains of Northwestern Massachusetts with special attention to the mansion she created there. A recent news item in the New York Times about The Mount, her mansion, has prompted me to write about that remarkable woman again. The Mount is about to be foreclosed if an infusion of three million dollars is not immediately forthcoming; more money will be required soon. A financial restructuring must take place in the near future if this magnificent landmark is to be saved.

Some great works of literature have been penned at Lakeside by writers known worldwide  --D.H. Lawrence, Tennessee Williams among them. There's no shortage of fantastic writers today at Lakeside, either. For those of you who harbor a desire to try your hand at writing, perhaps some of the sites listed below will motivate, encourage, and educate.
