A group of women from Manzanillo recently visited our Shelter. With the expectation of funding from a mentor they hope to build an animal shelter in their area and came asking for guidance. Geoffrey spent the entire day with them and covered every aspect of running a shelter like ours. We wish them well.
A couple of our dogs on a walk spotted a box off in a weedy lot near our Cat Center and strained on their leashes to reach it, pulling along their curious walker. Close up, our volunteer saw "Un Lindo Gatito" written on the side of the sealed box. He hurried to get Barb, our Cat Lady, and together they hurried the suspiciously heavy box into our Cat Shelter. In it were a mother cat and five kittens, still nursing although they were about 3 months old. The mother and two of the kittens survived emergency treatment. Although these two are still frightened, the mother is relaxed, very friendly and in good spirits. It's clear she had been a pet, and whoever had placed the cats in the box had hoped they would be found and taken in. But the chances that the box would have gone unnoticed, that they could have starved in the box or been attacked by a stray dog are great.
Please, if you have Mexican employees or neighbors whom you know are kind to animals, warn them never to abandon their unwanted animals in a similar way, for the consequences can be tragic. It would be so much better if you or they would come to the Shelter to explain their situation and ask for help. We will always take their unwanted babies once they are ready to leave Mom, and will spay the mom for poor Mexican owners. Fortunately, these cats are alive and well and very beautiful. The young mom is black with white trimmings and just charming, the kits black with some white. They were lucky to survive their ordeal. Who will keep them on a lucky roll and give each a good home?
King, our once-abused and fearful young Rottweiler mix, is still with us, but is all smiles these days. What a wonderful transformation. He shows great affection toward people and his Shelter mates. Molly, our black lab mix, showed off with a play bone the other day, so wriggly and happy she is irresistible. Molly's tiny pelvic fracture is healing perfectly. Sheena, a powerful bull/shep mix, shows great poise and confidence. She has the look of a guard dog, yet is sweet, friendly, gentle and easy to walk. She may do best in a one-dog household.
Molly, King and Sheena are only three of our terrific dogs. Come see, come adopt.
