Who would have imagined we'd be selling artichokes at the Shelter? These delicacies are hardly what you'd expect to see alongside our pet food supplies. But there they are! When an anonymous donor who works with farmers in Jocotepec gave us bushels of them, we astutely put a price of 5 pesos on each and saw them become bestsellers. The count at press time was over 400 sold and still selling. Our generous donor promises other vegetable surpluses to come our way, so keep an eye out when you visit us. Wonder if we should post veggie recipes on our website. . .and speaking of which:
You must check out our new website: http://lakesideanimalshelter.com. It tells you all about our shelter-and best of all: it gives up-to-date reports on our dog and cat residents in words and pictures and even video! Last month in this column, we had room to only mention Sheena, our friendly pit bull/shepherd mix, along with one line about our new website. Those who tuned in saw Sheena in action. In a short video, she plays, walks on a leash, trots right out of the picture, only to return to put her nose to the camera for a glam close-up. Sheena is a star. Could you give her a leading role in your household?
Dog Center volunteers rescued yet another dog from the casual cruelty of an owner. Contessa was a guard dog for a business near the Dog Center. When the business closed down, the owner abandoned the dog in the fenced yard. Neighbors occasionally brought food to her. The owner returned one day and simply let the dog out and left it. For a time, the dog was no where in sight, but volunteers realized she could be in an empty lot. When they called, she stuck her head out of a tin shack and they went to get her. They discovered she'd given birth to six pups. Mother and pups were brought in. Contessa is so gentle she allowed her pups to be handled and cared for. She is a very sweet-tempered, two-year-old German shepherd. Contessa will be ready for adoption in mid-March, just about the time you read this.
There's good news on the adoption front: Many of our dogs and cats got wonderful homes in February, including the darling mother cat found in a box with her litter that we mentioned here. It cheers us to see these dogs and cats leave for homes of their own, and we are inspired to remind you of the guys we still have. (Plus new ones!) Molly now wags not just her tail but her whole rear end, as her slight pelvic fracture is all better. She prances around with no sign of a limp. King, our rottweiler mix, is still with us. He gets more handsome by the day and would thrive in a loving home of his own.
So check our web sight to glimpse these residents. And if you're not computer-inclined, then come by and see us. Our cats and dogs welcome visitors.
