Often, as we walk the streets of the Lakeside villages or drive along the road we see many people without really taking note that they are there. On the corner of Revolución and the Carretera in Ajijic, where the tianguis begins, almost every day you'll find a young artisan offering beautifully woven carpets. I am speaking of Francisco, the rug weaver. Many stop by to admire the work of the intricate designs found in his pieces. The colors are alive and the patterns range from antique Zapotec figures to contemporary designs.

Mask Maker in Ajijic Luis Anselmo Avalos

Luis Anselmo Ávalos was born in Ajijic 45 years ago. His actual profession is that of industrial designer, although he has been working with clay and ceramics since 1980. His pieces are somewhat peculiar for the forms and characters they display. One can find animal faces, crying masks, nuns, vases and plant pots. The variety in his catalog is quite vast. There is one interesting fact about Luis's work; in it he mixes medias and materials very well. For Example there are clay masks with feathers, ropes, pieces of metal and so on. The same variety is shown in other pieces such as his clay nuns which are first painted and later covered with dresses made of paper maché.

John Richmond/Juan Compo

John Richmond is a Canadian, who was born in Toronto and now lives part of the year in Ajijic. He is a painter, muralist and cartoonist, who graces the pages of this publication with his monthly feature, Hola Mexico (page 31). For the past seven years or so, he has gone by the name of Juan Compo, which is the name he signs his paintings with.
