Day of the Dead... A memory

The air is crisp as we head up Highway 45 to celebrate the Day of the Dead, passing through increasingly barren land. Trees, that cover the gentle slopes and crops of russet milo maize, give way to prairie grasses and then nothing except cacti and the hardy shrubs, that live in this area of little rainfall in northeastern Jalisco.

Brujos

Here it is the end of October already. Time to pay homage to the darker side of the year. Time for Jack-o-lanterns, corn shocks, witches and things that go bump in the night. Here in Mexico we don't celebrate Halloween. We do celebrate "The Day of the Dead". Believe it or not, we also have witches. Here they are called Brujos, but they are not feted with masks and treats.

September we celebrate Fiestas Patrias. Three young women are elected candidates for the Queen of the Fiesta, the winner being decided by a vote. She will represent the pueblo as la Reina de las Fiestas Patrias.

On Thursday, in church, there is mass celebrated at 6:00 pm to commemorate the time when Jesus gathered his 12 Apostles, washed and kissed their feet as a sign of humbleness.

21st of March - Birth of Don Benito Juarez

Don Benito Juarez Garcia was born in San Pablo Guelatao, Oaxaca on the 21st of March 1806. His parents were Zapoteca Indians, Marcelino Juarez and Brigida Garcia. At the age of 8, Benito was orphaned and went to live with an uncle, and worked with him in the fields. At 13 he went to live with his sister, Josefa, and learnt Spanish; up to this point he only spoke Zapoteca dialect.
