Living in Mexico puts us at risk for a number of health issues we wouldn't normally face living in North America. Typhoid is one of them. The early symptoms of typhoid include headache, sickly feeling, lassitude, constipation or diarrhea, occasionally nose bleeds, hot flashes, cough, disturbed nights and sometimes, abdominal pain.

The lungs may become congested giving rise to bronchitis, pleurisy, or pneumonia. Symptoms for brucelosis are very similar to those for typhoid. The spleen is generally tender and enlarged throughout the disease.

With the recent outbreak of typhoid at Lakeside, we need to be more proactive in our approach to health. We need to hold the eating establishments at lakeside accountable for testing their staff on a regular basis. Restaurant and hotel staff that handle food must be required by law to wash their hands with soap and water. Keep in mind, if there is no soap in the washroom for you, the staff is not using soap to wash their hands either...and they are handling your food.

We also need to be aware that the appetizers offered with tacos can be a potential hazard for transmitting disease. These appetizers are often passed from table to table after being double-dipped and topped up. This practice can effectively spread infection. The charming roadside taco, chicken and food stands don't have running water...how can employees wash dishes and utensils? The answer is, they can't and don't.

Typhoid is passed by fecal contamination, not a pleasant thought. If you have typhoid, you have, in fact, ingested feces, first or second hand. Brucelosis is passed through unpasturized milk and cheese from infected goats or cows. Be very cautious about eating market cheeses and dairy products. Almost all of these products are unpasteurized. There are no government regulations about herd health either. The animals that run the beaches and roadsides are the source for many of the products we find at the markets.

I had never heard of anyone being positive for typhoid before I met a friend at a clinic who shared that she had been suffering with it for 6 months. She had been treated by several doctors and was about to try another. After numerous rounds of antibiotics her immune system was in a shambles and she was still testing positive. Another friend had serious liver damage from the strong antibiotic used to treat the disease.

I was booked to fly to Canada one month before I tested a high positive for typhoid and brucelosis. After the liver damage scenario, I was too scared to use the antibiotic treatment. I also hesitated to rely on a homeopathic remedy for a disease that would probably put me in quarantine if detected. I was booked for surgery while in Canada and it was a huge leap of faith to finally decide to go the homeopathic route.

Three days after starting treatment I was a new woman. The night- sweats, headache and extreme fatigue were gone. Two weeks later I tested negative for typhoid and the brucelosis numbers were half of what they had been.

If you are experiencing any of the above, or persistent flu-like symptoms, a simple blood test will give you same-day results. If you test positive, give some thought to treating these diseases homeopathically. Antibiotic treatment can suppress the symptoms and undermine the immune system without solving the problem. Homeopathic treatment can strengthen the immune system and prevent future recurrences.

If you have been diagnosed with typhoid or brucelosis in the past year we need to hear from you. We need to approach the local authorities about instituting health regulations for Lakeside restaurants. Please reply to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
