What is more important than the Current events in Mexico now, with the great swine flu epidemic? The situation is being handled very responsibly by the government and Mexican citizens alike. All have been strictly told to ride this emergency out within their own four walls where it is safest and avoid coming into contact with anyone who has a cough, or any respiratory ailment.
When asked what will happen to those who decide to take a trip and travel to another part of Mexico to enjoy a holiday, it seems that, there is not enough staff, for the PROFECO to impose fines etc. and so, President Calderon is asking that, people try their best to abide by the rules imposed to contain the area affected, thereby avoiding and the spread of any existing cases.
Today, the Current events in Mexico, have shown the responsibility the government has been taking, by implementing security measures, like keeping the country’s children, from primary school to university level, out of school until May 5th, or further notice, because of the great swine flu epidemic. Classes we believe will be made up in July to make up for this lost time. Our experience here is that schools are continuing to correspond with students, assigning homework, assignments and even exams, that were scheduled via the internet with times limits of the date issued.
Imagine that, currently in Mexico all the business of all kinds, except those essential to life, refrain from opening at this time until the virus can be contained. This means that restaurants that have been orderd to close, still have to offer payment of regular salaries to their employees. So, they are operating at a complete loss .
Mexico City in particular is like a ghost town. The streets are deserted, gas station attendents stand and wait for a car to drive in. No one seems to know how long this may last. Current events in Mexico, have changed a great deal in the last twenty years, in so far as what and how the government reacts to societys needs, and we can see that here with their response to the great swine flu epidemic.
