A Trip to Mexico City

Everyone told us, "Mexico City is cold in the winter!" We went and, wow! The weather was 75 to 80 degrees every day we were there. The seven hour bus ride took nine. Well, things happen; we made it safely and checked in to the Best Western Majestic Hotel in the Downtown area. The hotel is beautiful, has nice rooms, and nearby sightseeing. Exhausted, we had an early supper, wandered around the square, and then called it a night.

Cruising Through Puerta Vallarta

What places come to mind when considering a Mexican Pacific beach get away? Acapulco, Ixtapa, Mazatlan and Puerta Vallarta pop up. Searching for a Thanksgiving relax within driving distance of our home in Chapala, Mexico, we settled on an all inclusive resort, the Palladium in Punta Mita, about an hour north of Puerta Vallarta. Going to the beach for Thanksgiving resembles a pilgrimage among the expatriates living in Lake Chapala. The rates for the all inclusive resorts tumble, as hotels vie for the foreign resident trade for Thanksgiving, waiting for the Mexicans to overflow the resorts during the Christmas holidays. Many North Americans here repositioned themselves in Puerta Vallarta that week, with every travel agency in town offering "too cheap to stay home" packages at the all inclusive resorts that dot the beachfront from the southern point of Puerta Vallarta, around Banderas Bay rounding up to the northern tip at Guayabitos.

Now, this is the story starting in 1975, when the car was sold to me by some hippies in San Francisco and partially restored in Walnut Creek, CA.
The first grand tour commenced in June, 1974. and ended in October. 1974. It started from Walnut Creek to Montreal, Canada, via Vancouver, B.C., using the Trans Canada Highway. Then by ship to Southampton, England, driving around England and Wales, then by ferry to Dunkerque, France. Then through France, Luxemburg, Germany, Austria, and Yugoslavia. The tour continued on from Trieste to Barcelona via Monte Carlo, along the Costa Brava, then North to Madrid and from there back to Southampton via the Santander ferry.

OTR Driving in the Rain

The rainy season is here...definitely a good thing. Of course, living in this part of Mexico brings the more dramatic storms; it doesn't just rain, no, Mother Nature seems to be somewhat moodier in these parts. Personally I love it, those atomic clouds which generate forceful thunder that echoes through the mountains, and the buckets of rain drenching Lakeside just send me into the clouds. Unfortunately, this fabulous season can be dangerous for driving!

OTR-Cause and Effects

Driving is a huge responsibility. That large and heavy hunk of metal with a motor you are operating, can cause tremendous damage, hurt, and in some cases, kill people. The reality of it is, we've all sat in traffic as every passer-by slows to take a look at the wreckage of a serious accident. Upon passing, we think to ourselves, "Good thing we had to stop at the store." Whatever the cause, timing or fate (as some might believe), according to Reader's Digest, the odds of being involved in a fender bender are seven times in a lifetime of driving. One in twenty of these can be serious enough to cause injuries. Those odds are quite high, and can actually increase when driving in a foreign country such as Mexico, where the safety standards are not monitored. However, there are many things we can do to decrease those odds. Bad driving habits have a big influence. It seems that with greater experience on the road, one becomes over-confident and more relaxed.
